Fishing

The lakes, ponds and rivers in the immediate surrounding area offer a variety of fish and methods of fishing. You can catch whitefish, vendace and trout as well as perch and pike. You can fish by yourself or join the local experts fishing with a seine or a fyke net. Fishing licences can be purchased on the site.

Hunting

For hunters we offer wildfowl and hare hunting. The quota varies annually according to the quantity of game in the area. Moose hunting with a group is also available. For those who do not hunt, there are good areas for berry and mushroom picking in close proximity to the cottages.

Hiking

There are many hiking routes in the area around the Ollila Holiday Cottages. The marked trails leading to the nearby Muovaara Hill and its surroundings are ideal for enjoyable day tours. The old Eastern trade routes, i.e. the horse paths to Kuusamo and to the Russian border, can still be taken.

Bird Watching

There are many really good bird-watching sites near Ollila Holiday Cottages. With a stroke of luck you will see rare birds such as red-flanked bluetail, whose song has been heard right in the middle of our resort. In spring the pine forests are filled with the sounds of black grouse and capercaillie trying to win themselves a bride. You might even watch their display from your cottage window!

Boating and Canoeing

The Muojärvi waterway offers many possibilities for boaters and canoeists. The narrow, sheltered routes are safe to travel down. There are marked routes that take you to the west to Kuusamo town, and to the east all the way to the Russian border. You can find many fine spots at the protected islands of Lake Muojärvi where you can go ashore and take a break by a campfire, have a picnic lunch, and enjoy the peace of Nature.

Shingle Mill

You are welcome to visit the restored shingle mill at Ollila, where shingles are still made using old methods. We will step into the forest with a frame saw in hand, select the right kind of tree, and cut it down. Then we will bark it and cut it into blocks, and take them to the mill to be made into shingles.
